Most of us have heard the term "market saturation" at some point in time, although I must admit until I entered the world of Internet marketing I had given it little consideration.

The term holds much more weight for me now, and it surely will for you, too, if you’re involved in, or considering becoming involved in Internet marketing or Internet business.

Let’s take a moment to look at what market saturation is and why it’s important to business people and marketers.

Market saturation, by definition, is when the quantity of products in use in the market place is close to or at its maximum.

Now this definition is not referring to all products for all markets, but rather a set type of products for a particular market. For example, hedge trimmers, which would be marketed to gardeners, landscapers and gardening enthusiasts.

If there were just so many manufacturers producing hedge trimmers, and the market reached its capacity (meaning a high percentage of the gardeners, landscapers and gardening enthusiasts already owned hedge clippers) then market saturation would take place.

For those of us involved in business and marketing, market saturation can mean a huge dip in sales of our products.

If we’re involved in a market where there is a lot of competition and a limited market then the risk of market saturation occurring is higher.

This is one of the main reasons behind the trend of carefully selecting a niche market. The chances of market saturation occurring in a carefully chosen niche market it much less, since you’re marketing to a much less-served market, or perhaps a previously undiscovered market.

If you’re already involved in an Internet business or Internet marketing and you’re seeing your market move towards saturation you may be wise to consider selecting a smaller niche within your market.

By doing this, you can narrow down which niche within your current market is least served and concentrate your energy on it.

If you see that all niches within your market are well-served you may want to consider another niche, perhaps related to your current market, but less served.

When you’re involved in Internet marketing or Internet business driving traffic to your site is essential in how successful you will be. While there are many, many ways to bring traffic to your site, there are a couple tried-and-true methods that I favor over all others.

Let’s take a few minutes to go over my favorite methods of driving traffic.

1. An easy-to-find website will have more traffic than others. Making your site easy to find starts with the use of keywords used in search engines.

Ask your webmaster to use keywords that you have provided for your site to "name" each page of your website. This will increase the occurrence of your site coming up in searches.

2. Viral marketing is another of my personal favorite ways to drive traffic to your site. While you may believe that this is too difficult an undertaking for you if you’re a relatively new marketer, that is not true.

You can start a viral marketing campaign that’s on a fairly small scale by simply using mailings with an attractive offer to customers on your mailing list.

Be sure to include an invitation for them to pass it along to friends and you should see a noticeable increase in traffic in a fairly short amount of time.

3. My third favorite method of driving traffic to your site is by placing a "recommend this site" area on your website.

This makes it very easy and very tempting for your visitors to recommend your site to people they know.

As you can see by these three examples there are fairly easy methods available for driving traffic to your site.

These methods have been used by scores of marketers with a great deal of success and, if done correctly, should prove to be equally successful for you, too.

When searching for ways to generate traffic you will encounter all sorts of schemes and programs.

While, without a doubt, there are programs and methods out there that work, and work well, there are also a variety of schemes and programs that not only do not work, but are frowned upon by reputable marketers and customers, alike.

Top on my list of schemes to avoid are the Million Hits Traffic Generation schemes. Some people believe that the more traffic to their site the better their sales.

In searching for a means of driving massive traffic to their site they wind up joining some traffic generation scheme that promises to generate a million hits on your site.

Next they will waste away their valuable time clicking away on traffic exchanges.

Now, don’t get me wrong, not all traffic exchanges are schemes. However, some are exactly that.

Not to mention everyone who’s using this traffic exchange is a business owner, so unless your business has more to offer than the other’s do you won’t get any further with this method than you would have with any other.

Another scheme to avoid is the "sale" of traffic. Companies will offer to "sell" you massive amounts of traffic, usually some phenomenal number like a million hits or 10 million hits and in truth what it turns out to be are popup and/or popunder advertising.

I don’t know about you, but I’m plain tired of popup ads and will avoid sites that use them.

Programs like the ones I just mentioned are not and will never be replacements or solid alternatives to the tried-and-true methods of generating traffic such as SEO, pay-per-click and others.

Understandably marketers will have times when they’re frustrated with a lack of results, however with a little time and effort, along with education, there are a variety of methods that can be used to generate traffic and, once in place, require minimal maintenance to continue to produce results.

Although there is more work involved in these methods, when done correctly they produce real, steady results and they won’t annoy your visitors!

Whether you’re a regular visitor of forums (also known as message boards or chat boards) or not, you’re bound to be well aware of how popular they are. People love forums and new ones are cropping up everywhere on the web.

There are forums on virtually every topic known to man (or woman!). So what is it about forums that make them worth considering as an addition to your site?

Forums are interactive, and people love interaction, especially on the web. They are a virtual café, if you will, where people with common interests can go to chat and relax.

In modern times with the pace of life moving faster every day, people have discovered forums are a great way to socialize without having to leave their home and deal with traffic, weather, or other issues.

With the trend towards adding more interaction to marketer’s websites growing, you’d be wise to consider adding one to yours.

Not only will your customers be pleased with an addition that is obviously being added to please them, but the potential for it to increase your traffic and generate more and more repeat visitors is very high.

Combine this with the fact that the longer a person spends on a website the more likely they are to make a purchase, and you really can’t go wrong!

If you’re concerned with the difficulty in adding a forum to your website, don’t be. Most web hosts will be happy to help you out, and the added expense of having the forum on your site will surely pay off in an increase in traffic and revenue.

Like I mentioned earlier, the longer a visitor stays, the more likely they are to buy. And the more traffic your site gets, the greater your increase in sales.

Another idea you may consider is inviting your visitors to make suggestions on forum topics.

This will not only make them feel important and appreciated, but will allow them to start chatting it up on the forum right away!

Let’s face it. Search engines rule the Internet and have a lot of control over how well or how poorly our Internet businesses do.

Every single one of the millions of people who are surfing the Internet as we speak are using the search engines to find the "stuff" they want or need.

If they don’t find our business in their search results, we don’t have a prayer of making them into our customers. Search engine optimization (SEO) is key to our very survival.

The key to search engine optimization is the use of key words and phrases in the content on our websites. If we use them wisely and to our best advantage we get listed in the results when people use our key words in their searches. If we use them poorly, we won’t be found.

Key words and phrases need to be in the title of our home page….more than one time. They need to be included in our Meta tags, as well.

The density key words in the first 250 words on the home page needs to be between five and seven percent. If we use less, we won’t be listed and if we use more, we will be seen by the search engines as spamming.

It’s a fine line. This means that out of the first 250 words on a home page and including the title, the key words and phrases should be used between 12 and 17 times. No less than 12 and no more than 17 is about right and don’t forget this includes the title.

It is important that key words are used on every page of a website. They should not be as dense as they are in the first 250 words but they do need to be used.

Blatant and unrelated use of key words is not a good idea. That will be seen by the search engine as spamming.
