Viral marketing is not a new concept. The fact that it’s been taken to the web as a tool of Internet marketing is, perhaps, the only reason why most people know it by name.

Viral marketing is the well-known name for pass-it-along marketing, better known in the form of word-of-mouth marketing such as referrals. So can this form of marketing really work in a niche? Absolutely.

Although there are some forms of marketing that are not so well-suited for niche marketers, viral marketing is not among them.
Viral marketing may be one of your most effective marketing tools if you’re a niche marketer. You may be wondering now why I would say that. Let’s examine it for a moment.

Niche marketing is usually most successful when you find the least-served sub-market. For instance, say you’re interested in marketing art supplies, something you know a good deal about.

Well, that’s a pretty broad market. You’ll want to look at smaller, less-served groups within that market. So you narrow it down to calligraphy supplies, a much less-served market.

And, as is a well known fact, people with common interests tend to like to network, share ideas, information and connections. This is where viral marketing can be very effective in niche marketing.

Here’s how it works. You set up your website and start driving traffic to it. Then you put together update mailings, a newsletter or other such mailings and offer an area for people to sign up for them.

When you send these out you include a great offer such as a freebie or attractive discount along with an invitation for people to pass them along to their friends, knowing that most of the people who have visited your website will know at least one other person who would be interested in your products.

Viral marketing is a great, nearly free method of advertising.

As with any marketing method you’ll want to track the results of your campaign to see which offers are responded to the most and which ones your recipients may want to see, or see more of, which you can do by providing a method for them to send you feedback and ideas.

When it comes to business being an innovator can make a huge difference in how successful your business is.

Whether your business is a traditional brick and mortar business or an Internet business being innovative can increase your profit potential in a major way. How is this so?

Let me explain.

While there are certain business rules that should be followed, and certain trends that are worth following, most of the "rules" are more general guidelines than they are rules set in stone. So how do you know when it’s okay to be innovative and when you should stick to the more traditional rules of business or what is really a rule and what’s not? Let’s take a look at some of the rules of business and some of the guidelines.

Rules:

· Customer satisfaction is essential to success – This is absolutely true no matter what type of business you have. Unsatisfied customers will spread the word about your business as fast, if not faster than satisfied customers will. Before you know it your business will be suffering immensely.

· Free websites and e-mail addresses are not professional – Not only do customers find free websites and e-mail addresses to be questionable, but so do other business professionals. To be taken seriously as a business person you need to have a paid domain with a corresponding e-mail address.

· Knowledge of your products or services is essential to success – To be successful in business you must know the products or services you’re selling. This is not to say you must be an expert, though it wouldn’t hurt, but you must have solid knowledge of what you’re selling. This correlates to customer satisfaction.

Guidelines

· Don’t mix niches – While this can be good advice, there’s more than one way I can see that mixing niches can be not only innovative but successful. I’m not going to give my personal input here, but I can tell you that mixing niches has the potential to be very successful if done right.

· Don’t use busy patterns on your website – Now this has, at times, irritated me on some websites. However, if used sparingly and tactfully it can be a very effective means of drawing attention to a particular space on your website that may have otherwise gone unnoticed.

Without going on and on I’m sure you get the idea. While I wouldn’t suggest going off on a tangent and employing a brand new, never tried marketing method as your only means of marketing, I’d say you should give something new and unheard of a try every now and again.

You may just be pleasantly surprised!

Most of us have heard the term "market saturation" at some point in time, although I must admit until I entered the world of Internet marketing I had given it little consideration.

The term holds much more weight for me now, and it surely will for you, too, if you’re involved in, or considering becoming involved in Internet marketing or Internet business.

Let’s take a moment to look at what market saturation is and why it’s important to business people and marketers.

Market saturation, by definition, is when the quantity of products in use in the market place is close to or at its maximum.

Now this definition is not referring to all products for all markets, but rather a set type of products for a particular market. For example, hedge trimmers, which would be marketed to gardeners, landscapers and gardening enthusiasts.

If there were just so many manufacturers producing hedge trimmers, and the market reached its capacity (meaning a high percentage of the gardeners, landscapers and gardening enthusiasts already owned hedge clippers) then market saturation would take place.

For those of us involved in business and marketing, market saturation can mean a huge dip in sales of our products.

If we’re involved in a market where there is a lot of competition and a limited market then the risk of market saturation occurring is higher.

This is one of the main reasons behind the trend of carefully selecting a niche market. The chances of market saturation occurring in a carefully chosen niche market it much less, since you’re marketing to a much less-served market, or perhaps a previously undiscovered market.

If you’re already involved in an Internet business or Internet marketing and you’re seeing your market move towards saturation you may be wise to consider selecting a smaller niche within your market.

By doing this, you can narrow down which niche within your current market is least served and concentrate your energy on it.

If you see that all niches within your market are well-served you may want to consider another niche, perhaps related to your current market, but less served.

When it comes to niche marketing it’s imperative that you take the time to choose the right niche market. This is a multi-part process and needs to be done carefully to ensure that you’ve chosen the right market for you and a market that will be profitable in the future.

Let’s go over the steps you need to follow to properly research and select your niche.

The first step in selecting your niche is to take some time to brainstorm possible niches. Consider areas that you’re interested in, areas that you have knowledge or experience in and make a list of those first.

Once you’ve done your brainstorming you can then take your list and research the topics on the Internet.

The next step is the research phase. You’ll want to look each of your topics up one-by-one to see exactly how much coverage they have on the web.

This is particularly important when gauging what your potential competition will be like. If a market is already heavily covered you will want to make note of it for the next step, which will be finding possible smaller target markets.

You’ll also want to take the time to research possible products related to your prospective niche for future sales opportunities.

Once you’ve created a list of possible niche markets you’ll want to see if there’s any possibility for selecting an even smaller, more specialized niche market.

Remember to consider all aspects of each market and research them well to find as many potential niches as possible.

While this may seem like an awful lot of work to go through it can pay off greatly in the end when you’ve selected a niche that is greatly underserved and just waiting for someone like you to come along.

I’m sure you have a firm understanding of how to research and select your niche market now. Although it can be a time consuming process and maybe not the most enjoyable task you’ll undertake while starting your Internet marketing journey it is very crucial.

You may also want to consider saving your list for future reference in the event that you decide you want to enter more than one market or expand and/or add to the first niche you selected.
