If you are human you need things…all sorts of things. You go to stores and order things by telephone and by mail all the time. Think of all the things that you buy out in the real brick and mortar world.

That list will include everything from soup to hay. Every single thing that you can purchase out in stores and shops in the real world or that you can order by telephone and by mail are available on the Internet without exception.

Not only are all of the things that you buy available on the Internet, there are things on the Internet that you canít buy anywhere else.

Although everything that you can buy in the real world is available on the Internet, everything on the Internet isnít available in the real world.

You should learn about how things are marketed on the Internet if you have any thoughts about selling things on the Internet yourself, of course, but even if you donít plan to sell things yourself, understanding how things are marketed on the Internet will help you be a better informed consumer.

Sometimes the things that you want and need are available in the real world but much easier to get on the Internet.

Information is one of those things. You could spend hours in the library gathering information from dusty books that you could lay your hands on in only minutes on the Internet.

That information will be more up-to-date than anything you could possibly dig out at your local library. The Internet isnít called the Information Super Highway for nothing.

It can take months for books to be printed, cataloged and put onto library shelves but it takes only minutes for new information to be available on every subject you can imagine (and maybe some subjects that you would never want to imagine) on the Internet.

If you’re looking to go into business on the Internet you may be concerned that your website will get lost in the shuffle. Perhaps that is the main reason why you haven’t jumped in and started your Internet business yet.

Your reason for concern is a valid one. With all the competition on the web you want to have some sort of assurance that your website will get traffic. I may have just the solution for you.

Depending on the nature of the business you’re looking to start you may have a great option in working with one of the big web names such as EBay or Amazon.

Not only will you get instant recognition by being "partnered" with either of these companies, but there’s a steady, heavy flow of traffic to both sites.

While this doesn’t guarantee success and you still have to work hard to get your business up and running and seeing a profit, it does give you a boost.

So what can you sell if you’re "partnered" with one of these sites? Well, just about anything. I know people who have created EBay stores and they’re selling things like gift baskets, automobile parts, candles, computers, you name it.

With EBay you have the option of creating an EBay store or simply putting your items up for auction and using your own website for your store, whichever you prefer.

I know another person who sells used books who uses EBay, Amazon and half.com to list his inventory. Great exposure and credibility from being "partnered" with these sites have provided him with a very comfortable living.

While I’m not saying that these sites are the only options for sites to "partner" your business up with they do make a fine example.

You’ll want to check out each site carefully to find out all the details on how you can build a business with them.

Be sure to take careful notes for each site you’re considering and then compare them with one another to find the best fit for you and your business.

If you’re like many of us you’ve heard a great deal about how successful affiliate marketing can be.

And, like many of us, you’ve probably dreamed of how great it could be to have your own, successful affiliate marketing program.

The trouble is most people don’t have a clue as to how you would go about developing their own affiliate program. Let me clue you in.

The following 5 steps will give you enough information to begin developing your own affiliate marketing program.

1.Select a niche market – Be sure to research carefully before choosing a niche market.

You’ll want to not only select a niche that you are interested in and know something about, but also make sure that it’s a market that is less-served than others. This will prevent the problems of being involved in a saturated market later on.

2.Find affiliate partners – Once you’ve selected a niche it’s time to do your research to find marketers and site owners within your niche that could potentially be your partners.

You’ll want to look for established sites with good traffic that would benefit from being your affiliate.

3.Make your offer – Once you’ve found your potential partners it’s time to make your offer. You’ll want to be sure that your offer is a win-win offer, so take your time to create a careful presentation that will represent your program as beneficial to both of you.

4.Develop promotional materials – Once you have your partners you’ll need to develop promotional materials that will make their job of
marketing your products or services as easy and effective as possible.

You may want to enlist the help of someone with experience in this area to get you off the ground.

5.Never stop looking for new partners – As your success grows you may be tempted to stop looking for new partners. Don’t! You’ll want to always have someone waiting in the wings in the event that one of your partners must leave the program.

As you can see, developing an affiliate program is not all that complicated. While it will surely take some time and effort, the benefits of running a successful affiliate program make it well worth the time and effort required.

With all the flexibility in what you can do with and to your web pages these days it seems that some people have forgotten some of the standards that make a web page easy to read and easy on the eyes.

There are certain design flaws and obvious color-clashing issues that can not only make your page difficult to read but positively unsightly, too.

When designing your web page, or having it designed for you, be sure to take into account the fact that you’ll want all the truly important information and links to be a focal point on your pages.

This means that the area or areas on your page that contain the important information, links, etc. should draw the reader’s eyes to them.

If your page is designed in this manner you will score more clicks. If it is not, links in less seen areas will not get clicked on as often as you would like.

There is a science behind focal points. A good web page designer should know exactly what you’re talking about if you mention this to him/her.

If you’ve designed your own web page, or are planning to, you’ll be wise to take some time to read up on this topic to help you design the most effective web page possible.

Now, onto the clashing links issue. Not only are clashing links unsightly, but they can be difficult to read, especially when placed near one another and look downright unprofessional.

In my personal opinion they look sloppy and lead me to believe that one or more of them were inserted as an after-thought, which leads me to believe that the person managing the page is not professional.

When I visit a website that has clashing link colors it raises my suspicion and I’m not very likely to click on any of the links.

The other problem you may have is that certain browser’s do not support all link colors, so a color that one person’s browser will display, another person’s browser may not.

This will lead to a drop in clicks on your site, too. You would be wise to stick to more traditional link colors that you know are supported by all browsers.

As you can see, simple, little design flaws and choices can have a big impact on your business.

Customer loyalty has always been vital to the success of a business. If you’re in business and don’t offer enough, provide high quality products or services, or maintain pricing, your customers may be tempted to go elsewhere.

In traditional brick and mortar businesses this has always been a concern. However, on the web it’s far easier for a dissatisfied customer to just click a couple of times and find another business to spend their money with.

When it comes to maintaining your customer’s loyalty on the web the key to doing so is offering more of what your customers want and backing it with stellar customer service.

While this may seem like a daunting task to undertake, and it does require hard work, it’s not as difficult as you may think. So how do you offer your customers what they want and how they want it?

The most essential factor in giving your customers just what they want is first, knowing what they want. This requires research on your part.

If you’ve not yet started your business take the time to check out the successful competition in your niche of choice and see what they offer.

If you’re already in business you need your customers’ feedback. Include a feedback form on your website to give your customers the opportunity to provide suggestions to you.

Not only will this make them feel important and appreciated, but it will give you valuable insight, too.

Maintaining your customers’ loyalty is not difficult once you get to know them.

Remember, while it will undoubtedly take more time and effort to keep your customers happy and loyal, the amount of time you spend on knowing their wants and needs and meeting them is far less than the time it would take to try to rebuild your business if you lost your best customers to the competition.

The costs of building and running a website can vary a great deal. Much of the cost variance is based on whether or not you’re going to build your own site, how many pages your site will contain, what options you want on your site and the company you choose to be your web host.

With that in mind, let’s go over a few of the basic costs involved in building and running a website.

The first cost is that of building your site. If you build your own site it can be done virtually for free.

You own your computer, already have internet access and either have an HTML editor in your computer or can find one for free on the web so there would be no cost incurred if you build it on your own.

If you want someone else to do it for you then there are fees involved. You can have a pre-fabricated site put together for you at a price as little as $50.00.

However, this is a very basic, very bland, one or possibly two-page site; probably not what you’re looking for. For a more professional-looking site with, say 10 pages, you’re looking at a price range of $500 to as much as $1,000, or more.

Having a good idea of what you want in a website can save you a lot of time and money when having one built for you.

Running your website can vary in price range, as well.

Depending on the web host you use, how much server space you require, how many optional features you have on your site and how much maintenance you want the web host to do the price can range from a very basic $19.95 per month to well over $250, or more.

You will want to discuss pricing and options with several web hosting companies before you make your choice.

One important thing to remember when considering site building and hosting is to do your research before choosing a company to build your site or host it.

A little time doing research now can save you a lot of money later on.

New Internet marketers are no doubt ambitious and driven by the idea of being successful and making money from their Internet venture.

While ambition is a good thing, the true key to success with Internet marketing is knowledge. It’s imperative that you know what works, what doesn’t and how to put it all together to make your venture work.

Here is a short list of some of the most commonly made mistakes by new marketers.

Not having your own domain name – No one will believe you’re a legitimate marketer making legitimate money if you’re using a free site.

As with brick and mortar businesses, image is everything. If you’re striving for success your image will suffer using a free site.

Using free e-mail addresses such as Yahoo, gmail, or Hotmail – As with the free websites, using free e-mail services don’t lend professionalism to your image.

If you have a legitimate web host that you pay for your domain you can create your own e-mail address on that domain.

Unprofessional look on your website – If your website looks like the strip in Las Vegas with flashing banner ads and cheesy graphics people will assume you’re an amateur.

Your site needs to have quality look and quality content. You’ll also want to take care in the layout of your site making sure that it’s easy to navigate and makes sense.

Poorly written content – Before you jump to conclusions, don’t assume that I’m going to tell you to hire someone to do your content writing for you.

Unless you truly cannot write (many people think they can’t but haven’t really taken the time to try) then you can write. Whether you do your own writing or have someone else do the writing for you, be sure that it’s quality content.

You want to offer your visitors information they want that’s easy to read and grammatically correct.

As you can see, many of the mistakes made by new marketers are simple, avoidable mistakes. You can’t assume that you’re going to get something for nothing when it comes to Internet marketing.

Success as a marketer doesn’t have to cost you a fortune, but it will take some investment on your part, in time and money.

The characteristics of a successful Internet businessperson are not all that unlike the characteristics of any other successful businessperson.

There are a few notable differences that are worth mentioning to anyone who is analyzing themselves in an effort to decide whether or not they’d make a good Internet businessperson. Let’s take a look at those differences and also go over some of the basic characteristics of a good businessperson in general.

First let’s look at some characteristics of a good businessperson, regardless of what type of business they own.

· Good organizational skills

· Good communication skills

· Desire to succeed

· Ability to prioritize tasks or projects

· Knowledge of the product or service being offered

· Ambition

There are obviously more characteristics than those listed above, however I believe those are some of the essential, basic characteristics all successful business people have. Next let’s look at the characteristics that are necessary to be a successful Internet businessperson.

· Ability to work well independently

· Ability to make decisions independently

· Excellent written communication skills

· Firm grasp on the workings of the Internet

· Knowledge of internet business and internet marketing

· Ability to see "the big picture" since very little of what you do in the line of internet business can be measured in any fashion other than on paper

As with the other characteristics, there are surely more characteristics of a successful Internet businessperson other than what I’ve listed above, however those listed are essential, in my opinion.

The ability to work well independently and make decisions independently is essential since most Internet business people work alone, at least in the beginning.

They must be comfortable working alone while still getting the work done. They also must be confident enough to make important business decisions on their own without having someone else there to tell them they’re right.

Excellent written communication skills are imperative, since much of the communication that takes place in the world of Internet business is done via e-mail and instant messaging.

You need to be able to communicate clearly and effectively in writing to be successful in Internet business.

Having a firm grasp on the workings of the Internet and knowledge of Internet business and Internet marketing are easily understood.
You would open a flower shop if you couldn’t tell a rose from a daffodil, would you? This is more common sense than anything else.

As for being able to see "the big picture" it is essential more for your own sake than for your business, but plays a factor in how your business will be run.

You need to be able to look at the facts and figures to see your customer count, progress and sales without seeing the money in a register or people in your store.

Viral marketing is not a new concept. The fact that it’s been taken to the web as a tool of Internet marketing is, perhaps, the only reason why most people know it by name.

Viral marketing is the well-known name for pass-it-along marketing, better known in the form of word-of-mouth marketing such as referrals. So can this form of marketing really work in a niche? Absolutely.

Although there are some forms of marketing that are not so well-suited for niche marketers, viral marketing is not among them.
Viral marketing may be one of your most effective marketing tools if you’re a niche marketer. You may be wondering now why I would say that. Let’s examine it for a moment.

Niche marketing is usually most successful when you find the least-served sub-market. For instance, say you’re interested in marketing art supplies, something you know a good deal about.

Well, that’s a pretty broad market. You’ll want to look at smaller, less-served groups within that market. So you narrow it down to calligraphy supplies, a much less-served market.

And, as is a well known fact, people with common interests tend to like to network, share ideas, information and connections. This is where viral marketing can be very effective in niche marketing.

Here’s how it works. You set up your website and start driving traffic to it. Then you put together update mailings, a newsletter or other such mailings and offer an area for people to sign up for them.

When you send these out you include a great offer such as a freebie or attractive discount along with an invitation for people to pass them along to their friends, knowing that most of the people who have visited your website will know at least one other person who would be interested in your products.

Viral marketing is a great, nearly free method of advertising.

As with any marketing method you’ll want to track the results of your campaign to see which offers are responded to the most and which ones your recipients may want to see, or see more of, which you can do by providing a method for them to send you feedback and ideas.

From time to time you need to evaluate your website for content, inventory and marketing flair. Sometimes it’s simply a matter of making sure the content of your site is up-to-date, that all the links are working properly and everything is as it should be.

Other times the reason could be that traffic is slowing and your sales are slumping and you’re looking for the cause. What ever the case may be, it must be done to remain competitive.

A general purpose review of your site for keeping content current and links fully functional should be routine and scheduled. This will ensure that nothing slips through the cracks and becomes a major issue down the road.

Set a reminder for yourself to check your website out at least once a month so that you stay on top of your game.

If you start to notice that your sales are slowing down and you’re just not seeing the traffic that you’re accustomed to you may want to take a long, hard look at your website in comparison to the sites of your competition and other successful websites.

Perhaps your site is not as attractive and engaging as others. Or maybe you’re lacking some of the interactive tools that today’s customers really want.

So how do you evaluate your site and make the necessary revisions? Here are a few tips.

First, take a good look at your site. Jot down notes on what your site offers, how engaging you feel it is and what interactive features it has.

When doing this be sure to look at it from the perspective of a customer, this will allow you to provide a better critique of your site.

You’ll also want to click through your site to test the amount of time it takes to navigate through it and note any slow-loading pages, broken links or difficulty in navigation in general.

Next you’ll need to take a little web field trip. Search for the sites of some of your best competitors and then one or two sites that are not competition but are simply successful sites.

Spend your time taking notes on the same topics you noted on your own site as well as anything that you feel is particularly attractive to their customers and visitors.

When you’re finished compare your site to the sites you’ve visited and see what you need to do.
